Kwila Floating Deck & Glass Balustrade
LCL Construction Ltd replaced a water‑damaged 1990-era membrane deck with a warm, low‑maintenance Kwila (Merbau) floating deck, and added a glass balustrade to deliver compliant edge protection without compromising views or light. The result is a durable, modern outdoor living area with clean lines and robust performance in Auckland’s climate.
Existing Conditions
-
Original deck: 1990 membrane system exhibiting water damage and deterioration.
-
Issues observed: Surface failures consistent with age and moisture ingress; declining aesthetics and usability.
-
Objective: Remove failing elements and provide a long‑life, visually refined solution with minimal maintenance.
Project Deliverables
Kwila Floating Deck System
-
Adjustable pedestal system to establish falls, clearances and drainage.
-
Kwila decking boards installed with stainless steel fixings; perimeter finishes and edge trims as required.
-
Provision for drainage pathways and venting to maintain dry, serviceable conditions beneath the deck surface.
Glass Balustrade Installation
-
Frameless/low‑profile toughened (and where required, laminated) glass panels with compliant handrail/edge details.
-
Proprietary base shoes/spigots fixed to structure to achieve required line‑loads.
-
All terminations, returns and stair/landing interfaces finished to a high standard.
Design & Materials
-
Decking: Sustainably sourced Kwila (Merbau) – selected for dimensional stability, natural durability, and rich tone; suitable for exterior exposure with periodic oiling if desired.
-
Substructure: Adjustable pedestals over prepared substrate to achieve fall and ensure non‑invasive drainage (no fixings penetrating the waterproof plane where present).
-
Fixings/Hardware: Stainless steel exterior‑grade screws/clips; proprietary balustrade base hardware.
-
Balustrade: Toughened/toughened‑laminated safety glass with minimal visual obstruction and corrosion‑resistant metalwork.
Outcome
-
Durable, low‑maintenance outdoor living with a premium timber finish.
-
Unobstructed outlook and light via the glass balustrade while maintaining code‑compliant safety.
-
Improved performance and service life compared to the aged membrane deck, with enhanced street appeal and resale value.
